During her tenure as First Lady of Ghana and through her leadership of the 31st December Women’s  Movement, which mobilised over two million Ghanaian women, she was determined to ensure that women would not remain silent observers of change but active agents of it. She championed economic empowerment: adult literacy programs, income-generating schemes, and small business support became part of her agenda to break the cycle of poverty.

She advanced legal and political inclusion: her advocacy contributed to the passage of the Intestate Succession Law, empowering women and children to inherit property when previously they were excluded. She insisted on women’s participation at every level of society, in farming, in education, and in leadership. “When women are given the right tools and opportunity, they become innovative, they become entrepreneurs, and they become leaders.

Her vision for Ghanaian women has helped shift the narrative from being marginalized to being active participants in national development. She showed that empowering women is both a moral imperative and a strategic one for society’s progress.

It does take a woman to build structures that move beyond mere talk to actual impact.
